Introduction to New-Media Art

The course constitutes a peek into the world of new-media art. Students will explore the various aspects of the field and survey basic principles which make it unique in the art world. With short practical exercises, students will explore the various facets of the artistic space of new-media art, and begin developing a unique personal style and statement. At the end of each class, students will be given an exercise to submit in the following class. The course deconstructs the diversified and complex topic of new-media art creation into a number of creative modes, which coincide with various art fields, all of which were bound together to create the world of possibilities of the field. We will go over a number of core subjects, pillars of contemporary new-media art – up-to-date creation, social creation, collaborative creation, technological creation, experience-related creation, and multidisciplinary creation.

Programming

The scope of the influence that the computer revolution has had on our lives and the world is ungraspable. It is only the beginning of this revolution, but it is already hard to think of aspects of our lives which are not influenced by digital systems. This course provides a basis for the developing of an active creative stand considering the processes and possibilities generated by digitalization. We will learn how to write code and use it to create interactive software. We will tackle this task through JavaScript, and in a playful and visual way. Meanwhile, we will also challenge our thinking of “new media” by conducting a historical survey of key events that occurred in the field, of works and currents in digital art, and of moral questions concerning the age of AI – in relation to art and in general.

Introduction to VR

Annual course focusing on creating artistic experiences in a VR / AR and providing a diversified toolbox for independent creation in the field. The course includes shooting and editing of 360 videos, and practical studies of Unity 3D software, photogrammetric scanning, volumetric filming, 3D-environment design, and writing basic code in C language.

Conceptual Workshop
Lecturer | Ori Drumer

Advanced workshop dealing with contemporary art theories through texts, slides, and class discussions. Among the topics studied are post-modernism from the 1980s onwards, feminism in the post-modern age, and computers and technologies on the brink of the 21st century.

Videography
Lecturer | Arik Futterman

The course aims to get students better acquainted with the technical, practical, and theoretical aspects of the video medium. Students will be equipped with tools for filming digital video and managing lighting and sound, while considering the use of materials, editing and the full creative process of video art works and shorts in various styles. During the course we will watch and analyze segments from films and video works, which will expose the students to a variety of filming styles from the history of cinema and video art.

First Year Sculpture
Lecturer | Roi Carmeli

The course will focus on the fundamentals of sculpture, with an emphasis on the relation with technology and new media.
We will study various sculpturing work methods and techniques, with materials such as wood, iron, sponge, clay, etc.
We will study and discuss classical sculpture, while moving toward contemporary art and contemporary sculpture in particular.
In addition, we will experiment with working with engines, sound, and basic software, and begin connecting between the physical world of sculpture and the digital world, which expands contemporary sculpture.

Introduction to Performance
Lecturer | Kineret Haya Max

We will create a regular and continuous platform for thought and practice of forms of expression, based on the presence of the artist and the audience, which address the conditions of the space, biography of the artist, nature of the evet and the time in which it exists.

Art History
Lecturer | Dr. Irit Carmon Popper

The course is an introduction to the language of visual art. Its main axis will focus on modes of representation of the human body, addressing the two- and three-dimensional space in their cultural and conceptual context. In addition to theoretical classes, we will be visiting exhibitions.

Sound
Lecturer | Lior Pinsky

The course deals with the medium by creation and experimentation with the world of the musical note. We will learn the basics of voice theory, the fundamentals of working with software for musical creation (Ableton Live), recording and audio editing, and building various electronic sound generators. The course includes an introduction to groundbreaking artworks of experimental musicians and plastic artists, who tested the boundaries of technology and the use of voice in their works. We will also show examples of combining diversified media in artworks like Sound Poetry, Radio Art, Soundscape and more. The course will include practical exercises where students will be asked to create works by applying in practice the studied material.

Drawing
Lecturer | Meital Katz-Minerbo

Students will learn to draw still life, nude models, and portraits. They will also study a variety of drawing techniques (academic, expressive, collage, long and fast poses, and perspective drawing, among others). The lectures will introduce before the students past and present artists and artworks pertaining to drawing.

Video and Editing
Lecturer | Ran Eisenstadt

The course introduces cinematic language through the world of experimental cinema, video clips and documentaries. During the course, students will be equipped with tools for filming and video editing and study the programs Adobe Premier and Adobe Encore. Various exercises will be given, and at the end of the year students will present a film that they shot and edited.

Photoshop
Lecturer | Itai Nadav

The course teaches students the various Photoshop tools as well as effective working habits for a digital environment. Students will be introduced to the digital lab: study the different stages of scanning and processing the digital file up to the printing preparation stage. With short practical exercises in photography and photo processing, we will be dealing with various topics and become acquainted with artists and photographers who use the software as a central tool in their practice, and as a personal or political expression. Students will also be introduced to the software’s many features and begin creating works in Photoshop in an intelligible and effective way.

Technological Crafts
Lecturer | David Lockard

The course aims to enrich your technical toolbox. In the first half of the semester, we will experiment through exercises with a variety of tools, techniques, and materials: 3D printer, laser printer, CAD, manual tools, pasting and adhering. We will stress the combination of manual and digital work methods. In the second half of the semester, we will begin working on ongoing projects. The course includes practical work.
