Archeology of the Art of Sound
Lecturer | Dr. Yoni Niv

Annual course
A course combining history, critical theory, and practice, surveying the concept “sound art” in the art field in general and the tradition of experimental composition in particular.
We will examine the development of the concept in light of the technological changes in production and manufacturing methods from the 19th century onwards. We will follow various auditorial technological advancements from the invention of the phonograph in the second half of the 19th century, using the reel-to-reel tape recorder and the sound generator in the late 20th century, and to the present-day digital culture. We will examine the complicated attitude of composers and sound artists toward the creative space that these advancements foster. We will also discuss the question of why and in which manner musicians started to imagine sound in terms of space, from various theoretical perspectives, and analyze different artistic currents that rose to the challenge.
We will also address more general terms such as “notation”, “note” and time/space relations revisited in the 20th century. Meanwhile, we will dedicate a substantial portion of the course to practical work ahead of the submission of the final project.
