The course focuses on the development of conceptual and creative thinking, while learning and combining various techniques. We will deal with ways to develop a body of work, which originates in an idea that demonstrates personal expression, and see how the technique serves the process. The course combines thoughts of space, object, artist, and viewer.
We will focus on the intricate relationship between art, technology, popular culture, and social activism, which is emblematic of the history of video art and of many video works and artists to this day. Video art, which had been distinguished by anti-aestheticism and experimental activity, has become one of the dominant and most widespread media in the contemporary art world. In addition, the expansion of the medium and the multitude of screens have caused it to become part of our day-to-day experience in private and public spaces. We will discuss in depth the significance of video in the world of performance, video as a sculptural element, installation, feedback and hidden cameras, social activism, parody as a tool for criticism, the new role of the viewer, personal documentary, the body, cinematic stages, influences of painting and sculpture language, interactivity, and the internet. During each semester, historical processes, and central questions in the world of video will be translated into exercises, emphasizing methods and aesthetical skills, and content and workflow development. We will invent, plan, and produce by means of group discussions, watching video segments, reading texts, submitting practical studio exercises, and writing papers. The discourse will revolve around the points of interest arising from the works of the students.
Video mapping course dealing with various video projections techniques, which in the past few years have become widespread in many art fields. The course will introduce the world of live video projections, video installations and projection mapping, exposing students to a variety of works in the field. Students will study different options and ways for projection mapping, mapping projections on objects and on buildings. They will learn to operate the Vigi and Resolume Arena software, and the background for additional software. Students will also work on mapping projection/object/video installation, independently or in groups (selected works will be exhibited at the Musrara Mix Festival).
The course aims to equip students with an advanced video editing toolbox, while studying the After Effects software and the variety of features it offers; to experiment with post-production techniques extracted from the world of commercial television and implemented in the world of art.
Advanced workshop dealing with contemporary art theories through texts, slides, and class discussions. Among the topics studied are post-modernism from the 1980s onwards, feminism in the post-modern age, and computers and technologies on the brink of the 21st century.
The course aims to enhance the interactive object building skills of the participants, based on the open software/hardware Arduino.
During the course, students will:
– Learn to understand the basic uses of electricity, and to read basic electrical schemes.
– Undergo basic training in electronics.
– Learn how to approach existing electronic systems, in order to recycle/exploit their components and sub-systems to build new systems (tinkering, circuit-bending, hacking).
– Understand the fundamentals of the programming language used in Arduino.
– Study and utilize sensory principles using light, heat, touch and more.
– Study and utilize electrical operating principles of various actuators such as engines, speakers, electromagnets and more.
– Practice simple robot-building with vibration-based engine layout.
– Become acquainted with various interaction models from the past/history of interactive works.
– Create works with new, original, fresh interaction models, from basic principles to utilization.
Combined, inter-departmental course surveying different currents and periods in the history of art, serving as an intellectual background and cultural reference for designers in the contemporary era.
Annual course focusing on creating artistic experiences in a VR / AR and providing a diversified toolbox for independent creation in the field. The course includes shooting and editing of 360 videos, and practical studies of Unity 3D software, photogrammetric scanning, volumetric filming, 3D-environment design, and writing basic code in C language.
